The 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, scheduled for January 5, 2025, have announced their nominations, highlighting exceptional talent in television. In the category of Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television, the nominees are:
1. Baby Reindeer
Streaming on: Netflix
“Baby Reindeer” originated from Richard Gadd’s play which was awarded with a very costly prize. The show tells the troubling and personal story of a man stuck in an unhealthy and obsessive relationship with a stalker. This is Richard Gadd acting as himself, and he effortlessly brings this emotional turmoil to the screen making the audience really live the tension and anxiety.
Why it Stands Out:
Audiences and critics alike have been full of praises for the series as the story is genuine and the acting is astounding. With the previous series having earned several critical awards, like the Emmy, it is still grossing profits due to its too true plot.
2. Disclaimer
Streaming on: Apple TV+
Two-time Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón’s “The Look of Silence” exhibits Cate Blanchett in the character of Catherine Ravenscroft. She is a working journalist who has her life thrown into turmoil after a book is released that uncovers a heretofore hidden, dark secret from her past. Oscar winner Kevin Kline is featured as a bereaved husband caught up in the mystery.
Why it Stands Out:
The well-written plot, along with the signature style of the acclaimed director, is incredibly intriguing to watch. The most compelling factor of Cate Blanchett’s performance is her ability to convincingly portray her character. Following this, Cate Blanchett was nominated for the Best Actress category of the Miniseries.
3. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story
Streaming on: Netflix
The notable true-crime play unfolds the astonishing Menendez brothers case, delving into their dysfunctional family ties, the murder of their parents, and the massive media attention the trial took. It is a retrospective of the time when the events transpired, with the aim to carry on the inquiry to the roots of the boys’ disturbed minds.
Why it Stands Out:
What is an Extraordinary Feature of the Show:Is this simply the best rendition of the story? Obviously, Cooper Koch & Javier Bardem who gave stupendous performances in their roles, came up with the fresh idea to tell the story in a novel way.
4. Ripley
Streaming on: Netflix
“Ripley” is a screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” with Andrew Scott playing the lead role. It follows the story of Tom Ripley, a con artist hired by a wealthy man to fetch his son from Italy, who finds himself in a world of deceit, fraud, and even murder.
Why it Stands Out:
Because of the work by Andrew Scott and the mid-century aesthetic which has been presented so perfectly, this series has seen undisputed success. Portraying psychological complexity and suspense through the series was well accepted with the nomination for Best Actor in a Limited Series from this year’s Golden Globes for Andrew Scott.
5. The Penguin
Streaming on: Max (formerly HBO Max)
Gotham PD, the highly-anticipated spinoff from the DC universe, spins the tale of Oswald Cobblepot’s ascent to power as the undisputed king of the Empire City underworld. As the leading role, Colin Farrell turns into the titular character giving a spectacular performance that is packed with action and at the same time delves into the depths of Cobblepot’s thoughts and motives.
Why it Stands Out:
Its mysterious narrative and Farrell’s jaw-dropping playing style have succeeded in exciting both fans and critics, which is why he has been nominated for the Best Actor in a Limited Series award.
6. True Detective: Night Country
Streaming on: Max (formerly HBO Max)
An anthology directed by Cary Fukunaga is the setting for the fourth episode of the critically acclaimed series “True Detective: Night Country” and it takes place in Alaska. Jodie Foster plays Liz Danvers, the protagonist, who investigates the case of the deaths of eight men at a remote research station in Arctic winter.
Why it Stands Out:
The spooking shots and the biting climate as well as with Foster’s forceful enactment have made this season the one to be remembered. Foster has been honored with the nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series, and her actions have never been so memorable.
